What Pain Medication Do I Take After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

For any person who has undergone a Weight loss surgery, the most common complaint is that of pain. Unfortunately there is almost nothing that can be done about this. Your doctor may be able to prescribe you some narcotics to take to ease the pain but in many cases these do not fully work. If your doctor does prescribe narcotics then the choices are very few but include items like Zantac, Darvocette and Percosette. As far as over the counter medications the rule is that you are not to take anything.

The physician will prescribe you pain medication for the soreness associated with the Gastric bypass surgery but unfortunately if you have a headache you will have to try and sleep it out. Taking almost any type of pain medication may cause bleeding as it will thin your blood out.

As far as taking Tylenol, in many cases it is ok to take 1 small dose every once in a while, but not every day and most certainly not multiple times a day or in amounts greater than 100mg. The surgeon may allow you to take children’s Tylenol or acetaminophen in small doses as it is the liquid form only.

Not only can pain medications lead to bleeding if you were to take aspirin you may get an ulcer or even gastritis. Tylenol has been attributed to causing liver damage in many gastric bypass patients and pain medicines like Motrin, Aleve and even Naproxen have also been known to cause ulcers.

Some patients may ask whether they can take something like Viox, but unfortunately due to the many lawsuits going on over Viox, it will be impossible to find a physician to prescribe it. As far as Celebrex, most doctors will not prescribe it simply because of the Viox lawsuits.

It may also be suggested not to use the topical pain medications that come in the form of creams or gels as these also contain aspirin and it the aspirin that gets absorbed by the body and can lead to the same things as taking the medicine orally.

If you are experiencing pain after your Lap band speak to your physician and do not just go out and buy Tylenol thinking that the one dose will not hurt you. Although many doctors say 1 dose of Tylenol every once in a while is ok, your case may be different and that one dose may just cause a complication.
