Hair Health From The Inside Out

June 21, 2008 By: PF Category: Beauty

Most individuals recognize the fact that your hair is “dead” or at least not living however this is not entirely true. The follicle that produces your hair is part of your skin which is the biggest organ of your body, therefore it is directly affected by your lifestyle, your habits and your diet.

Consumers are constantly looking for the next great hair product that promises to fix all their hair woos without realizing that building a healthy foundation is extremely important. Experimenting with different products is perfectly fine however many of us over look the fact that our hair health is determined by our over all health.

In order for our body to function properly we must provide it with specific nutritional factors. For instance in order for our bones to stay healthy and strong we must take in a minimum amount of calcium and vitamin D. This premise is the same if we expect our body to produce strong healthy hair, there are certain requirements that must be met that has nothing to do with the type or brand of hair products we choose to use.

1. Ribolflavin also known as Vitamin B2 is essential to the body and must be consumed on daily basis as it is water soluble meaning that it is not stored in the body. The functions of Vitamin B2 are numerous and include energy metabolism, red blood cell production, enzyme reactions, vision, health of skin (including hair and nails), and functions as an antioxidant. This vitamin can be found in dairy products, whole grains, eggs, nuts, meat, fortified cereals and dark green vegetables.

2. Biotin or Vitamin B5 is also a water soluble vitamin which must be ingested on a daily basis. It is important for the synthesis of fat, glycogen, and amino acids, enzyme reactions, healthy hair and nails and DNA replication. This vitamin can be found in liver, yeast, nuts, egg yolks, soybeans, cauliflower and mushrooms.

3. Deficiencies of Folic acid (Vitamin B9) can lead to hair loss. This water soluble vitamin can be found in foods such as citrus fruits, fortified cereals, nuts, legumes, and dark leafy vegetables.

4. Deficiencies in Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) can lead to scurvy, this has not been a concern for many years but cases are becoming more common. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, and red peppers.

5. Iodine is necessary in making thyroid hormones, and symptoms of an under active thyroid can often be seen in hair health. Hair may be dry, brittle, limp, or in some cases thinning. It should be noted however these symptoms may also indicate an over active thyroid. Iodine can be found in salt, seafood, and sea vegetables such as kelp. This is becoming a greater issue because the use of salt has greatly decreased in an effort to combat high blood pressure.

6. Iron deficiencies can also cause hair loss therefore ensure that you are getting enough in your diet. Iron can be found in many fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish and fortified breads and cereals.

We all know that exercise is not only good for our waist line but also our over all health and this is again important to hair health. Exercise improves hair health by increasing circulation.

Smoking is bad for us and we are all aware of the dangers of this habit but did you know that smokers are four times more likely to have grey hair then their non smoking counterparts. Smokers are also more prone to hair loss.

Healthy hair is one of the indicators of over all health. Take care of your body as a whole and you will have strong healthy hair.

Houston Skin Care: Houston’s Admired Skin Betterment Methods

June 21, 2008 By: PF Category: Beauty

Popular Houston skin care methods include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser skin rejuvenation, and Botox injections - all of which are non-surgical and non-invasive, unlike plastic surgery.

If you’re curious about these procedures in Houston, skin care in general or where to find local practitioner, keep reading for more information.

Microdermabrasion in Houston, TX

Microdermabrasion is a basic procedure designed to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and reduce the effects of sun damage and skin discoloration. It can be performed by any Houston skin care professional, including dermatological nurses and qualified estheticians.

Because microdermabrasion uses a mild abrasion to slough away dead skin cells, patients are advised to avoid the sun and any products containing exfoliating properties, like Retin-A or alpha-hydroxy acid, before undergoing treatment.

Microdermabrasion costs, on average, approximately $75 and higher for each treatment, depending on the size of the area covered and the number of treatments purchased. Most patients require between 3 and 6 treatments to obtain the desired results.

Chemical Peels in Houston

A chemical peel is considered a medical procedure in Texas, meaning your Houston skin care professional must be a dermatological nurse, dermatologist or other certified doctor.

A chemical peel is ideal for unevenly pigmented or sun damaged skin. Most chemical peels are comprised of glycolic acid or trichloracetic acid or a combination of these two. The procedure typically involves about 7 to 21 days of recovery, at which time the patient should avoid sun exposure or possible skin irritants.

Laser Skin Resurfacing in Houston

Laser skin resurfacing is used for skin discoloration, age spots, acne scars, varicose veins and wrinkles. The laser light penetrates deep beneath the skin’s surface, meaning the subsequent results tend to last longer than those provided by chemical peels or microdermabrasion.

After your laser skin resurfacing procedure, you’ll most likely experience mild swelling and minor discomfort. Your Houston skin care doctor will then prescribe you ice packs and mild pain medication. Though rare, redness can continue for several weeks.

Botox Treatments in Houston

Because Botox can actually prevent wrinkles, many Houston skin care professionals and dermatologists are prescribing small amounts of the drug as part of a comprehensive wrinkle-prevention skin care regime.

Most Botox treatments have a longevity period of approximately 3 to 4 months. However, some patients can go up to 6 months between treatments.

Finding a Houston Doctor or Skin Care Practitioner

If you’re searching for a qualified Houston skin care professional or doctor, try the database of members at the National Coalition of Estheticians (http://ncea.tv) or the Texas Dermatological Society (http://www.texasdermatology.org).

What it takes to Lose Weight

In order to have weight loss you must one of two things. Either eat less, therefore taking in fewer calories, consume less calories each day, or increase the quantity of calories you burn (or your metabolic rate). The majority of diets create a change in your metabolic rate, and the quantity of calories consumed. You can manage this on your own by count calories and exercise, with that being said it can be tedious attempting to keep with a plan you’re creating as you go. Following a predetermined Fat Loss Program will make it easier on yourself.

How to Make it Easier

Weight loss programs offer you a blue print to work from when trying to lose weight. Even thought different weight loss plans use different processes the end result is the same. This diet is easy to follow Internet based weight loss plan that uses a web based diet tool to custom select and develop meal plans for you. If you’ve struggled with losing weight before this will make it a lot easier.

Old Fashioned Dress Pants

June 20, 2008 By: PF Category: Weight Loss

When I was a teenager, there was nothing you could do to get me into dress pants. I was always a jeans kind of girl, and I hated anything that was not made of denim. You would have an easier time getting me into a dress back then, and I would quite often get into fights with my mother over this issue. I was always self-conscious, and I always thought they made me look horrible. At least with jeans my small stomach could be held in, but that was never the case with dress pants, especially when my mom insisted I tuck in my shirt.

My mother always had many old fashioned ideas about dressing and how to wear your hair. She said if you aren’t slender, you should always have very short hair. I disagreed with this just as much as I disagreed with her about wearing dress pants. Though my weight problem at the time was very minor, there were other girls I knew who had a bit more to carry around. I always thought that hair should go with the face, not the body, and people should wear what they want. You couldn’t get me into dress pants and you couldn’t change my mind about hairstyles either.

It’s a good thing that I don’t have to dress up very often today, as I still can’t stand dress pants. They always look awkward on me and I am never comfortable. Though I know many would argue with me, I do think comfort should be number one. If you feel stupid in something it is going to show in your demeanor. Why would I want to wear dress pants if I feel like a frump in them? I’d much rather be a little under dressed than to spend the whole day wishing I could just go home and put on my jeans.

My daughter, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to mind dress pants. Maybe that is because they have come a long way since I was a kid, and she seems to not mind them. This is a girl that insisted on wearing a tutu to the grocery store, so perhaps I am jumping ahead of myself a bit. She may not have had time yet to decide if she likes dress pants, and perhaps sometime soon she’ll make up her mind for herself. They do look good if you are comfortable in them, but I do know that I will allow her to make up her own mind.

Supplements For Menopause - The Truth About Menopause Supplements

June 20, 2008 By: PF Category: Supplements

Taking menopause supplements doesn’t mean instant relief gratification from the symptoms of menopause however, over time, nutritional supplements will certainly help.

One of the misconceptions with menopause treatment is that going natural will solve all your symptom issues instantly and this is simply not true. For almost instant relief then you need to explore treatment such as HRT and this is an option you should discuss with your doctor.

Whether you decide to go natural and use herbal and vitamin nutrition for menopause you need to realize it takes time for your body to absorb these especially nutritional products, but using them in conjunction with treatment such as HRT can provide you “the best of both worlds.”

Hormone replacement therapy has had some bad press but you shouldn’t dismiss it completely especially if your symptoms are driving you “mad.” Your doctor can obviously make recommendations and remember, there are different levels of HRT treatments.

By getting a good balance between HRT and menopause supplements regime then you are satisfying your relief needs and building up a long term barrier to combat symptoms for the future.

Menopause Supplements Option

Different menopause supplement products will target different areas of affliction. And depending on the product that you use, the effect on your body will be equally varied as well.

You can also have a different degree of effectiveness depending on the product you use, and how it your body will respond to it. This is why it’s important to consult a physician for advice on what product to get, because the product that you’ll be using might have adverse effects on you instead of letting you cope with the pain of menopause.

Aside from taking nutrition for menopause to ease the menopause period, one can also do some other things and make some changes in lifestyle to complement the supplement treatment better.

This will make you have less trouble coping with changes in hormone levels in your body. And these are some things that you can do on your own, and as an added bonus, these meet the approval of doctors as well.

One thing that you can do is to keep your dietary intake in check during menopause. The body will adjust its hormonal levels automatically during these times and the body will also automatically regulate the adrenal glands as well as the fat deposits where the estrogen hormone is produced.

You should also have an increased supply of vitamin C, whether it’s through citrus food products or in a tablet form, because this will have numerous beneficial effects on the body to help so you can cope with menopause better and not have to spend your time feeling that you’re going to go crazy.

Sensible nutrition intake can help over the long term and this is how you need to approach nutrition for menopause from a relief point-of-view.

Ten Vegetables You Should Eat To Improve Your Health

June 20, 2008 By: PF Category: Nutrition

Have you ever wondered what exactly the “healthiest vegetable” is? Well, that question popped into my mind the other day and I decided to research it. I saw some people claim that broccoli was the best, others argued that spinach does the most for the body, and still others were claiming that swiss chard held the top spot! All gave solid reasons for their chosen veggie, and while they didn’t all agree on which is the healthiest, it’s pretty safe to say that each one has its own wonderful benefits for your body. Here I’m going to list ten vegetables that, when all added to your diet, can make a drastic change in your health!

1. Collard Greens. With large, deep green leaves rich in Vitamin E, Calcium, and Beta-carotene, this member of the cabbage family is very nutritious on top of being delicious southern cuisine. Collard Greens provide more than a good meal and healthy nutrition, however – they have also been used in anti-cancer research. Their leaves contain diindolymethane, selenium, and sulforaphane, which have all been shown to have effects that can combat cancer.

2. Onions. Onions have been shown to have great health-promoting benefits. Onions contain a flavanoid (Antioxidant) called “quercetin”. Quercetin has been found to be the most active of the flavanoids. Containing not only antioxidants that fight free radical damage, it has also been shown to have incredible anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties.

[spin]3. Red Peppers. (Bell peppers) These colorful vegetables not only make a lovely accent to any meal; they’re also quite good for you. Red peppers are rich in antioxidants, reducing damage done in your body by free radicals.

They are also bursting with vitamins A and C, and have been shown to reduce your risk for heart disease and stroke, due to their high levels of vitamins B6 and folic acid.|3. Red peppers. (Bell Peppers) Whether they are being used as a colorful display on the dinner table or adding a perfect flavor to the food itself, these beautiful peppers are known for their ability to add a certain zest to a meal. What most people don’t know, however, is that they contain plenty of Vitamins C and A, and because they are loaded with vitamin B6 and folic acid, they can seriously reduce your risk of heart-related illnesses and stroke. But they don’t stop there – these sweet veggies have loads of antioxidants, which make them another vegetable that fight off the aging effects of free radicals.[/spin]

4. Sweet Potatoes. Sweet potatoes are absolutely bursting with vitamins A (Almost twice the recommended daily dose!) and C, as well as having plenty of protein, calcium and iron. They also rank well in their amount of dietary fiber. Beta-carotene and vitamin C work very well together as antioxidants to reduce free radicals in your body. And they taste wonderful, too!

5. Broccoli. Broccoli is very well known for being an incredible anti-cancer food. Broccoli contains sulforaphane, an anti-microbial and anti-cancer compound that helps your cells to create cancer-fighting enzymes. It is also rich in vitamins C and A.

6. Carrots. Unfortunately for all 10-year-old boys, carrots won’t actually give you binocular vision. They will, however, help improve your vision, and are great for your eyes. The source of this is their rich quantities of beta-carotene. Your body naturally converts this substance into Vitamin A, and without enough of this nutrient one’s eyesight suffers horribly. Healthy amounts of Vitamin K are also included as well as being a plentiful source of Fiber. So be like Bugs and toss them into your soups, stews, smoothies, or eat them fresh and raw!

7. Eggplants. Eggplants are really fascinating, as they’re very good for you in numerous different aspects. Not only are they loaded with copper, potassium, vitamin B1 and fiber, but they’ve also been shown to have great impact on the health of your heart. – It’s thought they can even help reduce your risk for heart-related illness in the future! The rich purple skin of the eggplant is also loaded with antioxidants.

8. Spinach. While spinach’s fame comes from its supposed “amazingly high” iron content, the truth is that while spinach does have an above average amount of iron in it, it has many other nutritional benefits that are just as important if not more so. It has plenty of magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin A and vitamin C, making it a very nutritionally dense vegetable. It may not make you as strong as Popeye, but it will definitely improve your health!

9. Celery. Celery often seems overlooked as far as “healthy vegetables” go. It’s used plenty as low-calorie snack substitutes but it’s often not the first veggie to come to mind when thinking health-wise. True, it’s great for weight-loss and dieters, as it’s extraordinarily low in calories, but it’s also a good source of calcium, magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and potassium, making it surprisingly more nutritious than most would think.

10. Asparagus. Asparagus is one of the few vegetables loaded in vitamin E, making it great for skin health, and it also contains a lot of potassium, vitamin B6, and fiber as well. Another really cool thing about asparagus is two antioxidants it has called “glutathione” and “rutin”. Glutathione has been shown to have cancer-fighting qualities, while rutin is great for strengthening the walls of your capillaries.

All of these vegetables have been shown to be extraordinarily healthy, and by adding these into your diet you’re ensuring the health and wellbeing of yourself and your entire family! Don’t go for just the “healthiest”! Go for all of these healthy veggies as they’re all tasty and different enough to give a lot of variety to your foods!

Sedatives And Anti- Anxiety Pills Together Results Bad, Found By 100 Medical School Rankings

June 20, 2008 By: PF Category: Depression

The Jefferson medical school rankings are for the top medical schools for research on many deseases like depression .Many colleges with best medical school rankings teach all details regarding depression.

These days there is no excuse to suffer sadness alone as many clinical professionals such as cognitive behavioral therapists and psychiatrists can help with the problem. Depression medication can now be used in conjunction other depression treatments and are very successful for many people who have this condition. Today after many years of research and study, depression can be beaten but this does need an early diagnosis for this but unfortunately for some people the cost might not make it possible. The range of depression treatments and therapies currently used by psychiatrists primarily revolve around cognitive behavior and interpersonal therapy.

Both give a useful results even for just short-term sessions of around ten to twenty weeks and are almost always enough to get a depression patient started on their recovery towards a sound mental health. Before getting started on any medication, the patient must first get themselves to a reputable doctor; get a diagnosis of which type of depression they are suffering from: whether it is clinical, manic or another type. Owing to the large number of depression medications currently available, it would be easy to give the wrong one and make the condition worse. Drug companies have, over the years, realized the extent of the problem and considerable research has gone into producing a very wide range of drugs.

Colleges with 100 medical school rankings show more interest to teach how to cure depression. These colleges comes in 100 medical school rankings are more careful to deal with desease like depression.

In many types three groups of medication including the tricyclics and the more modern and commonly used selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and the monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Unfortunately the tricyclics have more side-effects so tend not to be prescribed with the same frequency as the newer types. Sometimes it is necessary to take a combination of drugs as this is the most effective method of controlling the problem. It is not uncommon for the doctor under these circumstances to prescribe two or more of the drugs if it will benefit the patient’s condition.
It is found in colleges with medical school rankings 2006 that medicines of depression have some side effects. So 2007 medical school rankings have advised to go for natural remedies.

Despite the advances, it is still not an exact science and often the dosage may be increased or even lowered to suit the individual’s needs. The patients are warned however not to do this mix and matching on their own depression medication or to adjust their own levels but leave it to the professionals. In the past, depression patients have mistaken sedatives and anti-anxiety pills for anti-depressants with bad results so this is something to be avoided. Although often prescribed as a combination treatment with other medication, anti-anxiety drugs are not used to cure the problem.

The reason for using these depression medication drugs is merely to calm the nerves of depressed patients not to help cure the depression itself. Many people prescribed with tricyclic medication will experience some of the more common side-effects. Although the side effects can actually cause the sufferer to lose their ability to function in normal life, unless this happens, many users are happy to put up with the side-effects. Side effects that cause problems should always be reported so a safer alternative can be prescribed without delay.
